The essence of I-Ching is change. 5,000 years ago it was this principle that led Fu Xi, the first Emperor of China, to formulate his hypothesis of 8 trigrams to represent the 8 universal principles or natural laws that lie at the heart of every situation. These are based on the 8 elements and directions of heaven, and from them evolve the 64 hexagrams that make up the I-Ching.
